Robert Swiatek (Ed M, mathematics education, 1966) writes, ""The Joy of Life Cookbook" will soon be published. It's a new edition of the cookbook I had published in 2002 - my first one - and it received great praise from the critics (3 5-star reviews.) I didn't even pay them off. Others raved about it, including one of the readers - whom I have yet to meet. She said, "I got a kick out of it - I couldn't put it down until I finished it." We know she can be trusted because her name is Monica. Order before publication through the form on bobcooks.com (find and click on "details") and you can have a copy for $10. I'll even pay for the shipping."

John Crean
(Faculty of Arts and Letters, 1985 )
John Crean (Faculty of Arts and Letters, 1985) writes, "I am retiring from the United States Army after 21 years and 1 month of active federal service on July 1, 2008. I have served our nation for nearly 33 years, which includes time in several western NY United States Army Reserve units.
For nearly ten years I have been a member of special operations, specifically Civil Affairs where I used academic skills learned from anthropology and history courses I took at UB. Over the years I have helped plan elections, formed a provincial governmental council, and was responsible for reconstruction of essential services and Iraq infrastructure projects over two deployments. We definately have and are making a difference. I will miss this aspect of my military career, however I am hopeful that the knowledge and skills I have learned can again be used in other organizations dedicated to improving the human condition. It sounds cliche but it all started with classes in Anthropology (which helped me become culturally sensitive) and American Studies (seeing the world through another perspective)at UB! "
